Hyderabad ORR Accident: Death Toll Climbs to Four as Family Members Succumb to Injuries
The death toll in the tragic road accident on Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road (ORR) has risen to four after two more members of the same family succumbed to their injuries late on Tuesday night. The victims were undergoing treatment at a private hospital following the horrific collision.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The accident occurred around 3:30 PM on Tuesday at Abdullapurmet, between the Peddamberpet and Bonguloor toll plaza sections of the ORR. A Volkswagen Polo car, driven by 37-year-old Bengaluru-based software engineer Veda Prakash Reddy, rammed into a slow-moving water tanker from behind. The impact was severe, resulting in immediate fatalities and critical injuries.
Veda Prakash Reddy died on the spot at the accident scene. His wife Himabindu, aged 28, their two-and-a-half-year-old son Arjun, his cousin Durga Prasad Reddy, and Prasad Reddy's wife Srija all sustained severe injuries in the crash. All the injured individuals were swiftly shifted to a private hospital near the DRDO complex for emergency medical care.
Rising Death Toll and Critical Condition
According to Abdullapurmet police inspector V Ashok Reddy, the young child Arjun succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday evening. Tragically, Himabindu and Durga Prasad Reddy also passed away later that night while receiving treatment. The sole surviving victim, Srija, is currently undergoing medical care at a private hospital in Jubilee Hills. Her condition remains critical as doctors continue to monitor her closely.
All the victims were tech professionals based in Bengaluru, making this incident a devastating loss for both their families and the professional community.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Police investigation revealed that the HMDA water tanker was engaged in watering plants on the road median at the time of the accident. Crucially, no safety cones or warning signs were placed to alert oncoming traffic about the slow-moving vehicle, creating a hazardous situation on the busy highway.
As a result, authorities have registered a case against the tanker driver under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):
- Section 106(1): Causing death due to negligence
- Section 125(a): Causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others
The investigation continues as authorities examine all aspects of the collision to determine further accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
