A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on railway tracks in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Wednesday, causing significant disruption to train services and raising serious security concerns across the northeastern region.
The explosion occurred around 5:30 PM near the Basbari area, damaging a section of the railway line that serves as a crucial transportation artery connecting various parts of Assam and neighboring states. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive search operation.
Immediate Impact on Rail Operations
Following the blast, railway authorities were forced to suspend all train movements on the affected route. Several important trains, including passenger and goods services, faced cancellations and diversions, causing inconvenience to hundreds of travelers.
"We have temporarily halted all train operations on this section as a precautionary measure. Safety of passengers is our top priority," stated a senior railway official.
Security Response and Investigation
Multiple security agencies, including the Government Railway Police (GRP) and bomb disposal squads, rushed to the spot for evidence collection and forensic analysis. Preliminary investigations confirm the use of an IED in the attack.
Security has been intensified across railway infrastructure in the region, with increased patrols and enhanced surveillance measures. The incident has prompted intelligence agencies to review the security situation in the border district.
Historical Context and Regional Significance
Kokrajhar district, located in the Bodoland Territorial Region, has witnessed similar security incidents in the past. The latest explosion comes at a time when the region had been experiencing relative peace and development.
Railway officials estimate that normal train services will resume only after complete security clearance and necessary repairs to the damaged track. Commuters have been advised to check with railway authorities for latest updates on train schedules.
