Indore Sewer Deaths: Two Workers Die, Rs 30 Lakh Compensation Announced

Tragic Sewer Incident Claims Lives of Two Indore Sanitation Workers

In a devastating incident in Indore, two sanitation workers employed by the Indore Municipal Corporation lost their lives after entering a sewer chamber near Choithram Hospital on Monday evening. The workers, identified as Karan and Ajay, succumbed to what officials suspect was toxic gas exposure inside the chamber.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to DCP Krishna Lalchandani, the tragedy unfolded around 6:30 PM near the Choithram Mandi Gate under Zone 13 limits. The workers were part of a team that had just emptied a septic tank and arrived at the hospital gate area to discharge collected water into a primary line chamber.

IMC commissioner Kshitij Singhal provided a detailed account: "Preliminary information indicates that the workers had not entered the chamber for routine cleaning. While the de-watering vehicle was releasing water, its pipe slipped and fell inside the open chamber. In a bid to retrieve the pipe, sanitation worker Karan allegedly stepped into the chamber without informing others."

Singhal continued: "He is believed to have slipped and fallen inside. Seeing him in distress, fellow worker Ajay entered the chamber to rescue him. Both were later found unresponsive."

Immediate Response and Investigation

Emergency personnel pulled both workers from the chamber and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals declared them dead after examination. Police officials have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following a comprehensive post-mortem examination, though initial suspicions point to suffocation from toxic gases present in the confined space.

Chief Minister Announces Compensation

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed profound grief over the deaths of the sanitation workers and announced significant financial assistance for their families. The Chief Minister has directed that compensation of Rs 30 lakh each be provided to the families of the two deceased workers.

This decision aligns with a landmark 2023 ruling by the Supreme Court of India, which mandated Rs 30 lakh compensation in cases of sewer-related deaths. Chief Minister Yadav instructed officials to release the assistance promptly in accordance with the court's order, demonstrating the government's commitment to supporting affected families in such tragic circumstances.

Broader Context and Safety Concerns

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns for sanitation workers across India who regularly perform hazardous duties in confined spaces with inadequate protective measures. The Supreme Court's 2023 ruling establishing compensation standards was specifically designed to address the disproportionate risks faced by these essential workers and provide meaningful support to their families in case of fatal accidents.

Municipal authorities have initiated investigations into the specific circumstances surrounding Monday's tragedy, with particular focus on safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and emergency response procedures. The deaths of Karan and Ajay serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers sanitation workers face daily while performing essential public health services.
