In a significant development for law enforcement in the Konkan region, a joint operation between police forces from Goa and Maharashtra has resulted in the capture of two experienced burglars linked to multiple thefts across state borders. This coordinated effort marks a major breakthrough in tackling cross-border criminal activities.
Details of the Arrest and Suspects
The suspects, identified as Rahul alias Diwan Omprakash Tomar, aged 36, and Rajpath Santram Pal, aged 52, both residents of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested at Roha in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The arrest followed an intensive 30-hour manhunt conducted by the Sindhudurg local crime branch, showcasing effective inter-state police collaboration.
Crime Spree Across Goa and Maharashtra
The burglary spree commenced in Goa during the intervening night of last Thursday and Friday, where the duo targeted six establishments in the bustling Mapusa market. Their focus was on bakeries, clothing stores, and plasticware outlets, with one notable theft involving ₹1 lakh in cash stolen from an outlet near Braganza Bakery.
Not content with their Goa exploits, the pair then crossed into Maharashtra, where they allegedly broke into seven shops on Achra road in Kankavli on April 5. The very next night, they struck again, targeting another seven shops at the Indira Gandhi Commercial Complex in Sawantwadi, demonstrating a pattern of rapid and brazen criminal activity.
Interrogation and Ongoing Investigations
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their cross-border crimes, providing crucial insights into their methods and motives. Currently, they are in the custody of the Sindhudurg police. However, Mapusa police authorities have initiated the formal transfer process to bring the duo back to Goa for further questioning and recovery of the stolen valuables. Further investigation is actively in progress to uncover any additional links or accomplices.
