Interstate Jewel Thief Arrested in Tirupati, ₹14 Lakh Gold Recovered
In a significant breakthrough, the Tirupati police have successfully apprehended an interstate thief connected to a high-profile jewellery shop robbery that occurred in Sullurpeta on March 14. The arrest led to the recovery of stolen jewellery valued at approximately ₹14 lakh from the possession of the accused.
Accused Identified as Serial Offender
According to Tirupati Superintendent of Police L Subbarayudu, the arrested individual has been identified as Velmurugan, also known as Pulsar Babu, a resident of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Police investigations reveal that Velmurugan is a seasoned criminal, implicated in around 24 theft and robbery cases spanning multiple states across India.
Details of the Sullurpeta Robbery
The incident unfolded on March 14 when Velmurugan visited Venkateswara Jewellers in Sullurpeta under the guise of purchasing gold chains. Employing his established modus operandi, he threw chilli powder at the shop owners and staff, temporarily blinding them. Seizing the opportunity, he swiftly fled the scene with 12 gold chains from the establishment.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Following a formal complaint lodged by the jewellery shop owner, the Sullurpeta police registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation. Through diligent efforts and detailed probing, authorities managed to track down and arrest the accused on Saturday. During the arrest, police recovered all 12 stolen gold chains, which collectively weigh 112 grams, from Velmurugan's possession. Additionally, his motorcycle was seized as part of the evidence.
