A profound sense of grief and outrage enveloped Itanagar on Friday as hundreds of residents participated in a solemn mass candlelight rally, passionately demanding justice for Yapi Potom, a young teacher whose tragic killing has sent shockwaves throughout Arunachal Pradesh. The emotional gathering highlighted the community's deep anguish and urgent call for accountability in the wake of this horrific crime.
Brutal Incident Details Emerge
According to detailed police reports, the horrific incident occurred between 11:00 PM and 11:30 PM on April 7. The accused, identified as Daksen (Dagsen) Riram, allegedly attacked Potom with a dao, a traditional machete-like weapon, near her residence in the ESS Sector of Itanagar. Following the brutal assault, Riram fled the scene, leaving residents in a state of profound shock and escalating fear. The sheer violence of the attack has deeply unsettled the local community, raising serious concerns about public safety. Authorities later confirmed the arrest of Riram in connection with the murder.
Community Organizations Lead the Charge for Justice
The impactful rally was meticulously organized by the Kargu Kardi Welfare Society (KKWS) and the Lodu Ao Welfare Society (LAWS), in close collaboration with the Arunachal Teachers’ Association (ITA), Itanagar Capital Region. The event garnered significant support from numerous other community organizations and a large number of concerned citizens, demonstrating widespread solidarity. In a particularly heart-wrenching moment, the victim's father broke down during the rally, emotionally recalling his daughter's indispensable role within the family. "She was the backbone of our family," he stated, his voice trembling with grief and loss.
Demands for Swift Action and Comprehensive Support
The organizing bodies presented a clear set of demands, calling for swift and decisive justice in the case. They also emphasized the immediate need for substantial compensation for the bereaved family, who are grappling with unimaginable loss. Special attention was directed toward securing the future of Potom's two minor children, who have been tragically left without their mother. The KKWS and LAWS urgently appealed to the government to implement robust rehabilitation measures. These critical measures include providing essential financial assistance, ensuring long-term educational security, and offering professional psychological counselling to help the children cope with the severe trauma they have endured.
The rally served as a powerful testament to the community's collective resolve, underscoring the pressing need for both justice for Yapi Potom and sustained support for her devastated family during this incredibly difficult time.
