Itanagar Police arrests two, seizes heroin worth Rs 2 lakh

In a significant crackdown on narcotics, the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) police have apprehended two individuals in separate operations, leading to the seizure of a substantial quantity of heroin with an estimated street value exceeding Rs 2 lakh.

First Arrest in Nirjuli Market Area

The police action commenced on Thursday with the arrest of Asadul Islam (19). The operation was conducted in the bustling market area of Nirjuli, under the jurisdiction of Naharlagun. According to Naharlagun SDPO Rishi Longdo, the suspect was taken into custody following a tip-off and subsequent surveillance.

During the arrest and search, officers recovered a total of 13 vials containing a brownish substance. Upon testing and weighing, the material was confirmed to be heroin, with a total weight of approximately 16.49 grams.

Second Peddler Nabbed in Naharlagun

Building on this success, the police netted another alleged peddler just two days later, on Saturday. The second individual arrested has been identified as Karjo Bedi (21), a resident of Lekhi village in Naharlagun.

Naharlagun ICR SP Nyelam Nega provided details of the case. During the initial apprehension of Bedi, a search led to the discovery of two vials containing heroin weighing 2.30 grams in his possession.

Major Haul from Rented Room

The breakthrough, however, came when investigators proceeded to search Bedi's rented accommodation. This search yielded a much larger cache of narcotics. Police officials found an additional 14 vials of heroin stashed in the room.

The heroin recovered from this location weighed 16.04 grams. When combined with the drugs found on his person, the total seizure from Karjo Bedi alone amounted to 18.34 grams of the illicit substance.

The coordinated efforts in these two separate cases have resulted in the confiscation of a combined total of 34.83 grams of heroin. The police have registered cases against both accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The ongoing investigations aim to uncover the sources of the drugs and identify potential links to larger trafficking networks operating in the region. These arrests underscore the police's continued vigilance and commitment to curbing the menace of drug peddling in the capital region of Arunachal Pradesh.
