Itanagar Police Conducts Historic Drug Disposal Operation

In a significant move against narcotics trafficking, police authorities in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) executed their first-ever disposal operation of seized drugs on Tuesday. The landmark event witnessed the destruction of a substantial 729 kilograms of cannabis, marking a crucial step in the region's anti-drug enforcement efforts.

Legal Compliance and Environmental Safeguards

Naharlagun ICR superintendent of police Nyelam Nega emphasized that the entire disposal process was meticulously conducted by the district-level drug disposal committee. The operation strictly adhered to the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and the recently implemented NDPS (Seizure, Storage, Sampling and Disposal) Rules, 2022.

SP Nega highlighted that the procedure maintained complete compliance with both legal requirements and environmental protection standards. This dual adherence ensures that the disposal not only follows statutory guidelines but also minimizes ecological impact, setting a precedent for future operations.

High-Level Supervision and Transparent Procedures

The disposal operation was supervised by senior police officials to guarantee proper execution and accountability. Key personnel present included SP (tax, excise & narcotics) Jhon Siram, SDPO Rishi Longdo, and Narcotics Control Bureau Itanagar zonal unit superintendent Samuel C Hangzo.

Naharlagun Police Station officer-in-charge inspector Krishnendu Dev played a pivotal role by presenting the complete inventory of items designated for disposal. He also provided all relevant case documents, ensuring full transparency throughout the process and maintaining strict adherence to established statutory guidelines.

Commitment to Public Health and Safety

Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega reiterated the police department's unwavering commitment to rigorous enforcement against narcotics. He emphasized that such operations are essential for safeguarding public health and safety in the region. The destruction of this substantial cannabis cache demonstrates the authorities' determination to combat drug trafficking and its associated social harms.

This historic disposal operation represents a milestone in Itanagar's law enforcement efforts, showcasing a systematic approach to handling seized narcotics while prioritizing legal compliance and environmental responsibility. The successful execution of this procedure establishes a framework for future drug disposal activities in the strategically important frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh.
