Imprisoned Maoist Leader Sabyasachi Panda Earns MA in Sociology from IGNOU

In a remarkable academic achievement, top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, currently incarcerated in the circle jail of Berhampur, has successfully completed his Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology (MSO) through the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). According to official sources, Panda appeared for his second-year examinations in December-January at a special center established within the jail premises.

Academic Pursuits Behind Bars

Sabyasachi Panda, who has been lodged in the Berhampur circle jail since his arrest on July 18, 2014, from a residential house in the Bada Bazar area, undertook this educational endeavor while facing over 130 Maoist-related cases across various districts. Alongside another convict, he sat for the exams, though the fellow prisoner managed to clear only three out of four papers, as per sources.

This is not Panda's first foray into higher education while imprisoned. He had previously enrolled in an MA program in Public Administration through the Odisha State Open University (OSOU) last year. While he cleared some papers in the first-year exams, he is set to appear for the second-year examinations along with back papers in the upcoming session.

Previous Academic Milestones

Panda's academic journey from behind bars includes completing his graduation through a correspondence course with IGNOU in December 2022. This demonstrates his consistent commitment to education despite his legal circumstances.

Institutional Support and Logistics

Circle Jail Senior Superintendent D N Barik highlighted that both IGNOU and OSOU have established dedicated centers within the jail to facilitate such educational pursuits. After enrollment, prisoners like Panda prepare for exams through self-study, with the jail authorities providing essential logistic support to ensure smooth conduct of examinations.

Legal Context and Other Inmates

While Sabyasachi Panda has been acquitted in several cases, a local court sentenced him to life imprisonment on charges of waging war against the nation. Despite this, his academic achievements underscore a broader trend within the jail. Sanatan Khillar, the jail teacher, reported that a total of 92 prisoners have enrolled to complete their school education through the National Institute of Open Schooling, including 38 for Class X and 58 for Plus II.

This initiative reflects the jail's efforts to promote rehabilitation and education among inmates, offering them opportunities for personal growth and skill development.
