Jaipur Vegetable Vendor Fatally Struck by Speeding Taxi in Bajaj Nagar
A tragic incident unfolded in Jaipur on Thursday afternoon when a 50-year-old vegetable vendor was run over and killed after an allegedly speeding taxi lost control and ploughed into his roadside stall in Bajaj Nagar. The violent collision resulted in significant damage to four vehicles and has ignited widespread outrage over reckless driving practices in the area.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident occurred around 4 pm near Mahavir Nagar, as the taxi was travelling from Gopalpura towards Durgapura Railway Station. According to police reports, the vehicle suddenly veered off course and rammed into the vendor's loading vehicle before crushing him. The impact was so forceful that it not only destroyed the loading vehicle but also severely damaged three motorcycles parked nearby.
Police identified the deceased as Mahesh Saini, a resident of Muhwa Mandawar who lived on rent in Bajaj Nagar. Saini routinely sold vegetables from his loading vehicle, which he parked along the roadside as part of his daily livelihood.
Excessive Speed and Violent Impact
Investigating officers stated that the taxi was being driven at an estimated speed of 90 kmph when it went out of control. The violent collision flung Saini several metres away, where he landed on the road with fatal injuries. Officers from Bajaj Nagar police station reached the spot within minutes and rushed the injured vendor to Jaipuria Hospital in a police jeep.
Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead during treatment. His body was subsequently kept in the mortuary for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation process.
Driver in Custody, Passengers Injured
The taxi driver escaped unhurt from the accident and was immediately taken into police custody. Two elderly passengers travelling in the cab sustained minor injuries during the violent incident. The passengers, who told police they were from Madhya Pradesh, revealed they had booked the taxi from Vaishali Nagar to catch a train from Durgapura Railway Station on Thursday evening.
Disturbingly, the passengers claimed they repeatedly asked the driver to slow down during the journey, but he ignored their warnings about his excessive speed. This revelation has added to the growing concerns about driver accountability and passenger safety in the region.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have seized the vehicle involved in the fatal accident and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The case highlights serious questions about traffic enforcement, driver training, and road safety measures in urban areas where such tragic accidents occur with alarming frequency.
This devastating incident has left the local community in shock while raising urgent questions about how to prevent similar tragedies in the future through better enforcement of traffic regulations and improved driver education programs.
