Kolar Student's Harrowing Journey: From Accident to Amputation and an IPS Dream
For Kusumanjali, a determined Class 10 student residing in Chinnanaganahalli along the KGF-Kuppam Road in Karnataka's Kolar district, the past several months have been an immense trial of physical and emotional endurance. Her life took a tragic turn on August 14 last year when she was struck by a tractor while en route to school. This devastating accident triggered a desperate scramble for medical care, forcing her family to rush between hospitals in KGF and Kolar before finally reaching a facility in Bengaluru.
A Father's Sacrifice and a Daughter's Resolve
By the time she arrived in Bengaluru, doctors faced a grim reality and had no choice but to amputate her leg. Her father, Shankar, a small-scale farmer with limited means, was compelled to make heart-wrenching financial decisions. He sold a portion of his agricultural land and mortgaged his family home to cover the initial treatment costs, subsequently spending an additional Rs 5 to 6 lakh on essential follow-up care and rehabilitation.
Despite the profound physical and psychological challenges, Kusumanjali displayed extraordinary courage. She insisted on appearing for her SSLC board examinations this year. "She promised me she would pass," her father Shankar recounted, his voice filled with a mix of pain and pride. True to her word, she traveled to the examination center in an ambulance and completed her papers with the assistance of a dedicated scribe.
Political Intervention and a Glimmer of Hope
Her remarkable grit and determination did not go unnoticed. The story captured the attention of senior BJP leader and Rajajinagar MLA, S Suresh Kumar. He visited Kusumanjali, offering words of encouragement and a firm promise to support her rehabilitation journey, which included facilitating access to a prosthetic leg. As she began preliminary trials for the prosthetic, a sense of hope cautiously returned to the family.
However, this hope was brutally short-lived. A few days ago, Kusumanjali was readmitted to the same private hospital after developing a high fever. Doctors diagnosed a severe bone infection, and the medical bills began to escalate alarmingly, quickly reaching a staggering Rs 5.5 lakh. With all his resources completely exhausted, Shankar was left with a mere Rs 15,000. In a moment of utter desperation, he revealed, "I didn't know what to do. I even offered to sell my kidney to pay the bill."
Divine Intervention: The CM's Relief Fund Steps In
At this critical juncture, help arrived. MLA Suresh Kumar rushed to the hospital and attempted to mobilize his political colleagues to negotiate with the hospital authorities, but these initial efforts proved futile. He then reached out to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's media advisor, KV Prabhakar, who responded with immediate urgency.
Prabhakar stated, "The matter was brought to the notice of CM Siddaramaiah and he directed us to act. We stepped in and assured that the bill would be cleared through the CM's relief fund." Kumar confirmed that following this intervention, the hospital agreed not to charge the family and would discharge Kusumanjali once she stabilizes, which is expected within two days.
"We will then shift her to a hospital where doctors have assured me that they will treat her without any charges and fit her with a prosthetic leg," Kumar added, outlining the next steps for her continued care.
A Miracle and a Dream for the Future
For Kusumanjali's family, this timely assistance felt nothing short of miraculous. "It was like a divine intervention when we received help like this," an emotional Shankar expressed. The story also highlights Kusumanjali's unwavering spirit and lofty ambitions. Recounting his conversation with the brave student, Kumar shared, "She told me that she aspires to become an IPS officer. I felt it was my duty to help this girl achieve her dreams."
This narrative is not just one of tragedy and medical crisis, but a powerful testament to human resilience, familial sacrifice, and the impact of responsive governance. Kusumanjali's fight continues, now with renewed support, as she dreams of serving the nation in uniform.
