Jandiala Guru firing suspect arrested after encounter

The Amritsar Rural Police on Friday arrested Lovepreet Singh, alias Love, the primary suspect in a firing incident at a residence in Jandiala Guru, following a brief exchange of fire. The accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the encounter and was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.

Details of the Arrest

Deputy Superintendent of Police Baljit Singh stated that acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Jandiala Guru Station House Officer Harpal Singh set up a checkpoint near the Jania village turn to intercept the suspect, who was traveling on a motorcycle. When signaled to stop, Lovepreet allegedly opened fire on the police team, prompting retaliatory fire that struck his right leg. The police recovered a .30 bore pistol with a magazine, three live cartridges, and the motorcycle used by the accused.

Background of the Firing Incident

The firing occurred a day earlier at the residence of Santokh Singh in Sheikhupura Mohalla, Jandiala Guru. Preliminary investigations revealed that the attack was motivated by a dispute between two inmates at Amritsar Central Jail. On July 8, Baljit Singh, alias Bulli, son of Santokh Singh, had an altercation inside the jail with Sawaran Singh, alias Kanha, who is currently lodged there. The police alleged that Kanha subsequently directed his associates to attack Bulli's residence to settle the score.

Efforts are underway to trace other members of the group and ascertain the full conspiracy behind the attack.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

The Amritsar Rural Police have intensified their search for remaining suspects. The police said that the accused's criminal record and the jail dispute indicate a pattern of organized violence. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
