Tragic Accident Claims Life of Young JCB Operator During Delhi Drain Cleaning Project
In a devastating incident that has raised serious questions about worksite safety, a 23-year-old JCB operator lost his life on Wednesday when his earthmoving machine overturned during drain cleaning operations near Dyal Singh College in south Delhi's upscale Lodhi Colony area. The victim, identified as Abhishek from Etah in Uttar Pradesh, was engaged in work that was part of a government project being executed through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred while Abhishek was operating the JCB machine to push debris into a drain that was approximately 16 feet deep. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the unstable and non-reinforced edge of the drain, combined with what appears to be inadequate safety measures at the worksite, caused the heavy machinery to lose balance and overturn into the deep excavation.
"By the time the operator was taken out, he was severely injured," police officials stated, describing the grim scene they encountered upon reaching the accident location. The critically injured operator was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre by PCR staff, but doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival.

DMRC had subcontracted the drain cleaning work to a private agency, which in turn had hired Abhishek as the JCB operator. Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of DMRC, provided additional details about the accident sequence: "The backhoe loader operator, engaged by our contractor, accidentally crossed the cutout area while removing debris and sustained fatal injuries. The operator allegedly couldn't apply the brake in time, causing the front wheel to slip into the cutout, following which the machine tilted and fell."

In response to the tragedy, DMRC has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and promised appropriate action based on the findings. A formal case has been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station, and authorities have confirmed that both the contractor and DMRC are providing assistance to Abhishek's grieving family.
A senior police officer involved in the investigation revealed: "Our investigation is currently underway to determine the precise role and responsibility of the contractor and other agencies regarding safety protocols and supervision at the worksite."

The accident occurred at a site where DMRC is engaged in cleaning work at Sunheri Nullah in south Delhi. Dyal Singh College principal VK Paliwal clarified the institutional boundaries: "The site is with DMRC for desilting as per government orders. We don't access it at all and have no control over it."

Last May, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi informed the National Green Tribunal that the desilting of the Sunehripul drain - which stretches 1.4 kilometers and flows alongside Defence Colony and beneath Lala Lajpat Rai Marg before connecting to Barapullah drain - had been specifically assigned to DMRC, with funding provided by the New Delhi Municipal Council.
The death of the young operator has sparked concerns about whether adequate safety measures were implemented at the worksite, particularly given the challenging conditions of working near deep, unstable drain edges.
