Mumbai: The city police have apprehended a 45-year-old jewellery manufacturer from West Bengal in connection with the alleged theft of gold valued at over Rs 4.51 crore, which was entrusted to him for crafting ornaments. The complainant, Sanjay Jain, lodged a complaint with the Dadar police station regarding the incident.
According to police officials, the incident occurred between May 14 and May 15 at Patilwadi near Maruti Temple in Dadar. Investigators stated that the complainant, along with two witnesses, handed over 2,959.03 grams of gold, worth Rs 4.51 crore, to the accused, identified as Tanmay Lalmohan Maiti, for the purpose of designing jewellery. However, after taking possession of the gold, the accused allegedly failed to return either the finished ornaments or the raw material. He subsequently shut down his jewellery manufacturing unit and fled the scene.
Investigation and Arrest
During the investigation, police gathered crucial information from an employee who worked at the accused's shop regarding his movements. Investigators traced a Rapido ride that the accused had allegedly booked to Diva in Thane district. This led them to obtain technical surveillance inputs and details about the driver.
Further inquiries revealed that the accused's relatives in Mumbai informed authorities that he had fled to his native village in West Bengal by air. A police team was dispatched to West Bengal, where the accused was tracked down and arrested from the Hooghly rural area with the assistance of technical intelligence. After obtaining transit remand from a local court, the accused was brought back to Mumbai.
Recovery Efforts and Further Investigation
Police have stated that efforts are currently underway to recover the stolen gold and identify any other individuals who may have been involved in the offence. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to uncover the full extent of the crime.
