Ranchi: Taking cognisance of the killing of 65-year-old Palu Khadia over alleged witchcraft in Gumla district, the Jharkhand State Legal Service Authority (Jhalsa) on Friday dispatched a team to provide financial and legal assistance to his wife.
Khadia was beaten to death on Wednesday night by a neighbour, Bahura Oraon, after a local sorcerer claimed that his relatives were suffering due to witchcraft practised by the victim and his wife, Sugi Devi. Bahura also attacked Sugi during the incident, but she managed to escape.
Jharkhand high court judge-cum-Jhalsa executive chairman Justice S N Prasad directed officials to take immediate action in the case.
Jhalsa stated that a team comprising para-legal volunteers along with administrative officials visited Sugi and handed her Rs 20,000 as interim relief. The team also requested the administration to provide full security to the survivor.
Additionally, the process for providing her compensation under the victim compensation scheme was initiated. The team also supplied food and other essential materials to the widow.
