Jharkhand High Court Mandates Swift Appointment of Lokayukta and Constitutional Heads
In a significant development, the Jharkhand High Court has been informed by the state government that the name of the candidate for the Lokayukta position will be sent to the governor's office for final affirmation within a week. A division bench comprising Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar was hearing a public interest litigation filed by petitioner Raj Kumar. The petition focused on the appointment of the Lokayukta and heads of other constitutional bodies in Jharkhand, which have remained vacant for several years. Kumar highlighted that these vacancies have persisted for over three years, causing significant delays in addressing public grievances.
The petitioner detailed that the absence of key officials, such as the chairman of the state human rights commission and information commissioners, has led to a backlog of more than 30,000 applications under the RTI Act. This situation has severely impacted the common people, whose problems remain unresolved due to the lack of functional oversight bodies.

During the proceedings, the government counsel provided updates on the appointment process. It was revealed that the state selection committee had forwarded names for the positions of chief information commissioner and information commissioners to the governor's office. However, the governor returned the list, requesting the committee to reconsider and make necessary changes.
