In a fresh incident highlighting misconduct within the force, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against one of their own personnel for allegedly attacking a medical professional. This marks the second such case against a policeman in the region within a month.
FIR Filed Against Police ASI in Doda
The J&K police, in an official statement, confirmed that an FIR was registered at the Doda Police Station on December 3. The case was filed based on a written complaint by Dr. Anzar Majid Malik, who serves at the district hospital. The accused was identified during the investigation as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ghulam Ali.
Dr. Malik alleged that ASI Ali wrongfully restrained him and physically assaulted him. The police statement emphasized that the FIR was promptly lodged under relevant legal sections, underscoring the department's procedural response to the complaint.
Video Evidence Triggers Legal Action
According to sources, the decisive police action came after a video of the incident surfaced. The footage captured the events of Wednesday evening in Nagri market's parking lot.
The video shows Dr. Malik, returning home from work on his scooter, attempting to make way for ASI Ali's car to exit. The situation quickly escalated when Ali's son stepped out of the vehicle to confront the doctor. As the argument intensified, ASI Ghulam Ali himself is seen approaching Dr. Malik, snatching his mobile phone and then physically assaulting him.
A Pattern of Misconduct and Zero-Tolerance Policy
In its statement, the Doda Police reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct within the force" and assured that the due legal process has been set in motion against the accused ASI.
This incident occurs barely a month after another J&K policeman faced action for a similar offence. In November, a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Nagrota was suspended after a video clip showed him slapping and kicking a Block Development Officer (BDO).
The earlier case also saw judicial scrutiny, with a local Jammu court on November 24 directing the Station House Officer of Gandhi Nagar Police Station to explain why no FIR was registered against the suspended DSP and his accompanying personnel.
The back-to-back cases have put a spotlight on disciplinary issues within the police force in the Jammu region, testing the administration's stated commitment to accountability and rule of law.
