J&K SDRF Sets Up 24x7 Emergency Camp on Highway for Amarnath Yatra

The Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has set up a 24x7 emergency camp along the Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH44) to provide immediate assistance to pilgrims undertaking the annual Amarnath Yatra. The camp is fully equipped with modern rescue equipment and personnel trained to handle various eventualities, including flash floods and landslides, which are common in the region during the monsoon season.

Comprehensive Emergency Preparedness

The SDRF camp is strategically located to cover a critical stretch of the highway, which sees heavy traffic during the yatra period. According to an official spokesperson, the team is prepared to respond to any emergency, from medical emergencies to rescue operations in case of natural disasters. The camp operates round-the-clock, ensuring that help is available at any time.

“We have deployed advanced equipment such as inflatable boats, life jackets, ropes, and cutting tools, along with medical kits to provide first aid,” said a senior SDRF officer. The force has also coordinated with local hospitals and police to ensure seamless evacuation and treatment of injured or distressed pilgrims.

Operational Details and Coordination

The emergency camp is manned by a team of 15 to 20 trained personnel, including divers, rescuers, and paramedics. They conduct regular patrols along the highway and are in constant communication with the control room. The SDRF has also set up a dedicated helpline number for pilgrims to call in case of any emergency.

“This year, we have increased our preparedness due to the forecast of heavy rainfall. Our teams are on standby to handle any situation, especially in vulnerable areas like landslide-prone zones and river crossings,” the officer added. The camp is equipped with satellite phones and GPS devices to maintain communication even in areas with poor network coverage.

Supporting the Annual Pilgrimage

The Amarnath Yatra, which attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees every year, requires extensive security and emergency arrangements. The SDRF’s initiative is part of a broader multi-agency effort involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The camp on the highway complements other safety measures such as medical aid posts, helipads, and control rooms along the route.

“We are committed to ensuring a safe and smooth yatra for all pilgrims. The 24x7 camp is a testament to our dedication to disaster management and public safety,” the spokesperson said. Pilgrims have welcomed the move, with many expressing relief at the availability of immediate help on the challenging highway.
