Panaji: A critical inspection of the Kala Academy Panaji's Dinanath Mangeshkar Kalamandir was carried out on Monday by the Kala Academy task force and the Public Works Department (PWD). This urgent assessment followed serious concerns about the deteriorating and creaking condition of the stage's understructure, which has raised alarms over potential safety hazards.

Severe Water Damage and Structural Decay Uncovered

During the detailed inspection, officials discovered alarming structural issues. The underbelly of the stage was found to be heavily soaked with water vapour, and the supporting frame had become completely rotten due to prolonged dampness. This severe degradation poses a serious risk of collapse if immediate corrective measures are not implemented.

Task force member Francis Coelho emphasized the urgency, stating, "We observed that the dampness has compromised the structural integrity to a critical level. Immediate action is essential to prevent any mishap, as the stage could fail without warning."

Urgent Appeal for Government Intervention

In response to the findings, the task force has sought an urgent meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. This request stems from allegations that the contractor responsible for the venue has failed to carry out necessary rectification work, despite repeated requests from Kala Academy staff for temporary repairs over an extended period.

"We are escalating this to the highest level because the contractor's inaction has left the structure in a perilous state. The safety of performers and audiences cannot be compromised," Coelho added, highlighting the frustration over delayed maintenance.

Architectural Vulnerability and Previous Mitigation Efforts

The iconic Charles Correa-designed building has long been vulnerable to water ingress, particularly because part of the Kalamandir lies below ground level. This design aspect makes it susceptible to moisture accumulation, which has now led to the critical deterioration of the stage's framework.

Earlier, consultants conducted comprehensive studies and implemented measures to address these issues, including the installation of waterproofing systems, drainage solutions, and pumps to remove excess water. However, these interventions now appear inadequate, as the current condition indicates that the systems have not effectively prevented the ongoing water damage and structural decay.
