Tragic Suicide of Kalyan Student Follows Alleged Train Assault
The Kolsewadi police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against unidentified individuals following the death of a 19-year-old student, Arnav Khaire, at his residence in Kalyan. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted responses from high-level politicians.
Family's Allegations and the Fatal Incident
According to the complaint filed by the deceased's father, Rajendra Khaire, his son Arnav was assaulted by a group of four to five people on a local train. The altercation occurred on November 18 as Arnav was travelling from Kalyan railway station to his college in Mulund. The argument reportedly started because Arnav was not speaking in Marathi.
Rajendra Khaire alleged that his son returned home to their residence in Tisgaon Naka, Kalyan East, around 12 pm, visibly distressed. The family claims that the mental stress and trauma from the physical assault ultimately led the young student to take his own life later that day.
Police Investigation and Political Response
Following the tragedy, the police initially registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). However, after recording the father's statement again, they have now filed a formal case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigation has gained significant attention. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde visited the grieving family on Saturday, assuring them that the police would thoroughly investigate the matter. Furthermore, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde interacted with Arnav's family members via a video call, reiterating the government's commitment to delivering justice.
Ongoing Probe and Search for Suspects
Authorities are actively pursuing the case. Two separate police teams have been formed to investigate the crime. The police, with assistance from the Railway Police, have identified the specific train in which the victim travelled on November 18 around 8:50 am.
A key part of the investigation involves analysing CCTV footage from the train and stations to identify the individuals who were travelling with Arnav and are alleged to have assaulted him. The police are working to trace the unidentified accused based on the descriptions provided.
The heartbreaking discovery was made in the evening when Arnav's parents returned home and found his bedroom locked from the inside. After breaking open the door, they found their son had died by suicide.
The case highlights serious concerns about public safety and linguistic intolerance on public transport, with the police investigation currently underway to bring the culprits to justice.
