Two Women Critically Injured in Kanpur Auto-Rickshaw Accident
In a harrowing incident at Ramadevi crossing in Kanpur, two women sustained critical injuries after being struck by a speeding auto-rickshaw that subsequently overturned on top of them on Tuesday night. The collision occurred as the victims were waiting for transportation after a shopping trip, according to police reports.
Dramatic Rescue by Passers-By
Alerted by the victims' desperate screams, nearby pedestrians immediately sprang into action. They managed to pull both women from beneath the overturned vehicle before rushing them to Kanshiram Hospital for emergency medical attention. The concerned citizens also apprehended the auto-rickshaw driver and handed him over to local law enforcement authorities.
Family's Shopping Trip Turns Tragic
Akbar Khan, a resident of Sanigwan, recounted the traumatic sequence of events. His wife Shabana Khan had traveled to Lalbangla Bazar with their daughters Samra Khan, 22, and Bushra Khan, 24, for routine shopping. After completing their purchases, the family reached Ramadevi Crossing via e-rickshaw and was waiting to transfer to an auto-rickshaw when tragedy struck.
"An out-of-control auto-rickshaw came speeding toward them with tremendous force," described Khan. "It struck both my daughters directly before flipping over and landing on top of them. My wife managed to move away just in time and narrowly escaped injury."
Critical Medical Condition and Hospital Transfer
The injured sisters were initially transported to Kanshiram Hospital, where medical professionals determined their injuries were too severe for the facility to handle. Doctors immediately referred both women to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, a higher-level trauma center better equipped to manage their critical condition.
Allegations of Drunken Driving Surface
Multiple eyewitnesses at the accident scene reported that the auto-rickshaw driver appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the collision. These allegations have raised serious questions about whether impaired driving contributed directly to the devastating incident.
Police Investigation Underway
Station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra confirmed that authorities are actively interrogating the accused auto-rickshaw driver. "The driver is currently in custody and undergoing questioning," stated Mishra. "We will proceed with appropriate legal action as soon as we receive a formal written complaint regarding this serious incident."
The investigation will examine all aspects of the crash, including potential charges related to reckless driving, endangerment, and possible intoxication while operating a vehicle. Police are collecting statements from witnesses and examining the accident scene to build a comprehensive case.
