Movie-Style Tunnel Robbery Strikes Kanpur Jewellery Store
In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller, a group of robbers carried out an audacious heist at a jewellery store in Kanpur's Chakeri police station area. The criminals dug a three-foot tunnel to gain entry, making off with valuables worth approximately Rs 8 lakh, including the store's CCTV DVR system to cover their tracks.
Details of the Daring Heist
The incident occurred at Khatu Jewellers in the Ahirwan area. The thieves burrowed into the shop from an empty plot located behind the premises. They successfully stole 1.5 kg of silver, 25 grams of gold, and around Rs 50,000 in cash. After completing the robbery, they uprooted two CCTV cameras installed inside the shop and took the DVR, effectively erasing digital evidence of their crime. The suspects then escaped through the same tunnel they had created, according to police reports.
Discovery and Police Response
Shop owner Sonu Verma had closed the store and returned home on Monday night. He was alerted to the break-in the next morning by a neighbour. Upon arriving at the scene, Verma discovered the tunnel that had been used for entry. Police were promptly informed and arrived to initiate an investigation. Station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra stated that the accused are being identified with the assistance of CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Concerns
Office-bearers of the Uttar Pradesh Adarsh Vyapar Mandal also visited the spot and expressed their displeasure over the continuous theft incidents occurring in the city. This robbery highlights growing security concerns among local business owners, prompting calls for enhanced measures to prevent such crimes in the future.
