Kanpur Police Arrest Man for Alleged Job Fraud and Hostage Case in Russia Scam
In a shocking case of deception and criminal intimidation, police in Kanpur have arrested Abrar Ahmad, a resident of Tiwaripur, for allegedly defrauding a local man of Rs 2.38 lakh by promising him a lucrative job in Russia. The victim, Praveen Kumar, also reported being held hostage and tortured in Mumbai during the ordeal.
Details of the Fraudulent Scheme
According to police reports, the incident began in 2024 when Praveen Kumar met Abrar Ahmad, who claimed to be an expert in overseas placements. Abrar lured Praveen with the promise of securing him a job in Russia at a monthly salary of Rs 70,000. To facilitate this, Abrar demanded Rs 2.38 lakh from Praveen under the guise of providing an offer letter and arranging a notary agreement at the court.
Praveen complied, initially giving Abrar a cheque for Rs 50,000 and paying the remaining amount in instalments. However, the situation took a dark turn in 2025 when Abrar took Praveen to Mumbai on the pretext of arranging a visa. There, Abrar and two associates allegedly held Praveen hostage in a room, forcing him to spend an additional Rs 1 lakh. When Praveen ran out of money, he was beaten up before managing to escape.
Police Action and Arrest
After his escape, Praveen demanded his money back from Abrar, but was met with death threats. Fearing for his safety, he filed a formal complaint with the police. Jajmau station in-charge Sanjay Pandey stated that based on the complaint, Abrar Ahmad was arrested in Motinagar. Following his arrest, he was produced in court and subsequently sent to jail.
