Kanpur Man and Accomplice Arrested in Police Encounter Over Bride Murder

In a shocking incident from Kanpur, a man named Sumit Singh and his accomplice, Dharmendra Kumar, were arrested following a dramatic police encounter in Mahoba district on Wednesday. The case revolves around the brutal murder of a young woman who was scheduled to marry on July 7, just days before the tragic event unfolded.

Discovery of the Victim's Body

The victim, whose identity has not been fully disclosed, left her home late on Monday night after her family members had fallen asleep. The next morning, she was reported missing, prompting her family to launch an intensive search. Her body was discovered near a hillside, approximately 300 metres from her residence, with several visible injury marks on her face.

Authorities, including Additional SP Vandana Singh, Kotwali police station in-charge Manish Kumar Pandey, and a forensic team, swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation. The post-mortem report later confirmed that the woman had been beaten and strangled to death, highlighting the violent nature of the crime.

Background and FIR Registration

The victim's brother, who serves as a constable in Sonbhadra district, revealed that his sister had studied up to Class XII and her wedding was imminent. Based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, an FIR for murder was registered against Dharmendra Kumar, a resident of Daharaa, and Sumit Singh of Mavaeekhurd.

SP Shashank Singh took charge of the case, forming four dedicated police teams to crack it. Key evidence was gathered, including the seizure of the victim's mobile phone and a review of CCTV footage, which provided crucial leads in identifying the suspects.

Police Encounter and Arrest

On Wednesday morning, acting on intelligence obtained through surveillance regarding the suspects' location, police launched a checking operation on the Daharaa road. During this operation, two individuals arriving on a motorcycle attempted to flee upon spotting the police. When surrounded, they opened fire on the police team, with one pellet hitting Kotwali in-charge Manish Kumar Pandey.

In retaliation, the police fired back, resulting in injuries to the accused in the leg, leading to their arrest. The swift action by law enforcement prevented further escalation and ensured the suspects were taken into custody.

Motive and Interrogation Details

During interrogation, Sumit Singh disclosed that he was in a romantic relationship with the victim. However, when his wife learned of the affair, she left him. Police stated that Sumit was enraged over his girlfriend's impending marriage, which motivated him to conspire with Dharmendra Kumar to murder her.

Late at night, Sumit lured the victim out under the pretext of meeting her, after which he strangled her to death and dumped her body in a forested area. This premeditated act underscores the calculated nature of the crime.

Recovery of Evidence and Key Leads

SP Shashank Singh emphasized that the CCTV footage and the mobile phone recovered from the victim were instrumental in providing key leads, with Sumit identified as the main accused. From the arrested individuals, police recovered several items, including the scarf used in the crime, a motorcycle, three mobile phones, two country-made pistols, and cartridges.

This evidence is expected to play a vital role in the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings, ensuring justice for the victim and her grieving family.
