Kanpur Police Crack Down on E-Auto Theft Ring, Arrest Three Including Aunt-Niece Duo
In a significant breakthrough, Kanpur police have apprehended three individuals, including a woman and her niece, for allegedly orchestrating a series of thefts by posing as co-passengers in e-autos and preying on unsuspecting commuters. The arrests stem from a high-profile incident on March 9, where jewellery valued at approximately Rs15 lakh was stolen from a woman during her journey.
Details of the March 9 Theft Incident
According to ADCP East Anjali Vishwakarma, the victim, identified as Ranjana, a resident of Badshahi Naka, was travelling with her two daughters to attend a wedding in Chakeri. She boarded an e-auto from Bhikharam Mishthan Bhandar and, upon disembarking near Ghantaghar Chauraha, made a shocking discovery: her purse had been tampered with, and valuable jewellery including a chain, ring, necklace, and anklet were missing.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Following the filing of an FIR, police launched an intensive investigation, meticulously scanning footage from 98 CCTV cameras across the city. This digital evidence proved crucial in identifying the suspect vehicle involved in the crime. Acting on a reliable tip-off received on Thursday, law enforcement officials swiftly cordoned off the Ghantaghar area and conducted a raid, leading to the arrest of the e-auto driver along with two women from CPC Maal Godam.
During interrogation, the accused revealed their identities as Juhi, Sanjna (a resident of Parampurwa), Radhika, and Shariq. Police confirmed that Radhika and Sanjna share a familial relationship as aunt and niece. The suspects also disclosed the names of two other e-rickshaw drivers allegedly implicated in similar criminal activities, indicating a broader network.
Criminal History and Ongoing Probe
Authorities disclosed that Radhika has a prior criminal record, with four cases already registered against her. Her husband, Gopi, is currently absconding, and police are actively pursuing leads to locate him. The investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying additional members of the gang and recovering the stolen items to ensure justice for the victims.
This case highlights the growing concern over thefts in public transport and underscores the importance of vigilance among commuters. Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious behavior and secure their belongings while travelling. The arrests mark a step forward in curbing such crimes in Kanpur, but authorities emphasize that further action is needed to dismantle the entire network involved in these thefts.
