Tragic Accident in Kanpur Claims Life of Salon Owner
A devastating incident unfolded in Kanpur's Ratanlal Nagar area on Monday, resulting in the death of a local salon owner. The tragedy occurred during excavation work on a vacant plot adjacent to the Dabauli KESCO substation, where a series of electric poles collapsed under unexpected circumstances.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The victim has been identified as Riyaz Ahmad, 40, originally from Bhatamohammadpur village in Chhapra, Bihar, and currently residing in Barra 4. According to preliminary reports, the accident began when a tree was uprooted by a loader driver operating heavy machinery at the excavation site. This tree subsequently fell onto nearby electric wires, creating dangerous tension in the power lines.
The excessive strain caused five electric poles to break and collapse onto the road below. This not only disrupted power supply in the area for approximately three hours but also created a deadly hazard for pedestrians and nearby structures. Two of these falling poles struck Riyaz Ahmad, who operated a hair dressing shop from a shanty located just outside the KESCO substation perimeter.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Witnesses and bystanders immediately rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion and seeing the collapsing infrastructure. They quickly transported the injured salon owner to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. From there, he was transferred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for more comprehensive care.
Tragically, medical professionals confirmed that Riyaz Ahmad had already succumbed to his injuries by the time he reached the hospital. The severity of the impact from the falling electric poles proved fatal despite the rapid response from those at the scene.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
In the immediate aftermath of the accident, the backhoe loader driver fled from the spot, abandoning the machinery at the excavation site. This has complicated initial investigations into the precise sequence of events that led to the tree uprooting and subsequent pole collapse.
DCP South Deependra Nath Chaudhary provided an update on the case, stating that authorities are currently gathering information about the plot owner where the excavation work was being conducted. The police department has indicated that further legal action will be pursued once they obtain a formal written complaint from the grieving family of the deceased victim.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
This tragic incident highlights several critical safety issues surrounding construction and excavation work near electrical infrastructure. The collapse of multiple electric poles not only resulted in a fatal accident but also caused significant disruption to power services in the surrounding community for an extended period.
Local residents have expressed concerns about safety protocols at construction sites, particularly those operating in close proximity to essential utilities like electrical substations. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers when heavy machinery operations intersect with existing infrastructure without adequate precautions and supervision.
As the investigation continues, authorities will be examining whether proper permissions were obtained for the excavation work and whether safety guidelines were followed at the site. The tragedy has left the local community in mourning while raising important questions about urban safety standards and construction oversight in rapidly developing areas.
