Kanpur Siblings Die by Suicide After Court Eviction Order, Family Alleges Harassment
In a tragic incident in Kanpur, two siblings died after allegedly consuming poison in the Naraini police station area of Banda district on Monday evening. The shocking event occurred following a recent court verdict that ordered them to vacate their house and shop, which were their only source of livelihood.
Discovery and Immediate Response
Passersby first spotted a man and a woman lying unconscious near a bridge, which immediately triggered panic among locals in the area. Alert residents quickly informed the Naraini police, who rushed to the scene. The police promptly transported both individuals to the Naraini Community Health Centre for emergency medical attention. Unfortunately, upon arrival, doctors examined them and declared them dead, confirming the worst fears of the community.
Identification and Family Background
The deceased have been identified as Anand Prakash, also known as Som, aged 30, and Chanchal Gupta, aged 34. They were the children of Prakash Chandra Gupta, who is locally referred to as Mithai Lal. The siblings were reportedly living together and managing their family's shop, which served as their primary means of income and sustenance.
Allegations of Harassment and Legal Battle
According to Shubha, the sister of the deceased, the family had been embroiled in a long-standing land dispute with their uncle and aunt. She claimed that these relatives repeatedly harassed the family over the old conflict and even filed a false case against them. The legal proceedings dragged on for an extended period, causing immense stress and financial strain on the siblings.
The situation reached a critical point when the district court delivered its final verdict 15 days ago, ruling against the family and ordering them to vacate their house and shop. This decision left the siblings without a home or income, plunging them into deep despair.
Provocation and Threats
Shubha further alleged that her uncle and another relative taunted her siblings in a cruel manner, telling them to "prove they're their parents' children by having poison." She also stated that neighbours were threatening to falsely implicate them in other matters, adding to their mental anguish. Troubled by continuous mental harassment, threats, and the overwhelming pressure from the court order, the siblings reportedly took the extreme step of ending their lives.
Demand for Justice and Investigation
In the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, Shubha has demanded an impartial and thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to her siblings' deaths. She is calling for strict action against those she holds responsible for the harassment and provocation. The family seeks justice to ensure that such tragedies do not recur in the community.
Official Response and Ongoing Probe
Baberu Circle Officer (CO) Saurabh Singh has confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been conducted on the bodies of Anand Prakash and Chanchal Gupta. He assured that all aspects of the case are being investigated thoroughly, including the allegations of harassment and the events leading up to the suicide. The police are examining the court records, statements from family members, and any evidence related to the land dispute to piece together a complete picture of this distressing case.
