A dramatic incident unfolded in Kanpur on Tuesday when a 16-year-old girl climbed a wireless tower at the police commissioner's office, threatening to jump if her boyfriend was not released from jail. The boyfriend, a 20-year-old youth, had been incarcerated since October 2025 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act following a complaint by the girl's mother, who alleged that he had eloped with her minor daughter.
Background of the Case
The case originated in the Sachendi police station area. After the girl was located, police arrested the youth and sent him to jail. The matter has been pending in court since then. On Tuesday, the boyfriend had a scheduled hearing at the Kanpur court, and the girl also arrived there. A heated dispute erupted between the girl and her mother over their statements. The girl wanted to testify in favor of the youth, while her mother pressured her to speak against him.
The Tower Climb
Following the argument, the girl left the court and proceeded to the police commissioner's office, where she ascended the approximately 30-foot-high wireless tower. From the top, she shouted that her mother had wrongfully caused her boyfriend's imprisonment and demanded his release. Police and fire department personnel attempted to persuade her to come down, but she refused and threatened to jump if anyone approached.
In a bid to resolve the situation, police summoned the youth from the court to the scene. Upon seeing him below, the girl voluntarily climbed down and embraced him. Both individuals were then taken inside by the police. The youth was sent back to the court, while the girl was taken to the women's police station for questioning.
Investigation Underway
Joint Police Commissioner Vipin Tanda stated, “The matter is being investigated. It will also be ascertained how the girl reached the tower and whether anyone instigated her to do so.” Authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the girl's drastic action and whether any external factors played a role.
This incident highlights the complexities of cases involving minors and the emotional turmoil that can arise within families. The police are continuing their inquiry to ensure a thorough understanding of the situation.
