Three Family Members Arrested, Police Officer Suspended in Kanpur Murder Case

In a significant development in the Gwaltoli murder case, Kanpur police have arrested three persons and suspended a police officer for negligence. The arrests were made on Monday following the tragic death of a 70-year-old man who was brutally assaulted in his home.

Details of the Arrested Accused

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sahil, his mother Radha Devi, and his sister Komal Pal. According to DCP (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava, the trio was taken into custody in connection with the murder that has shocked the Gwaltoli neighborhood.

Background of the Victim and Family

The victim, a resident of Gwaltoli area, lived with his wife and two daughters. One daughter was married, while the younger daughter remained with her parents. The family faced considerable hardship as the elderly man had suffered a paralysis attack in 2015 that severely limited his mobility. His wife supported the family by working as a domestic help, making their circumstances particularly vulnerable.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

The incident began with persistent harassment of the younger daughter by local resident Sahil, who repeatedly demanded her phone number despite warnings from her father. The situation escalated dramatically on Saturday evening when Sahil allegedly forced his way into their home, attacked the elderly man, and then escaped.

The younger daughter immediately reported the incident to police and filed a written complaint, but no action was taken according to her account. This inaction proved fatal when Sahil learned about the police complaint and returned to the house on Sunday afternoon with his sister Komal, brother Karan, and mother Radha.

The Fatal Assault

During the Sunday altercation, the situation turned violent when Karan allegedly struck the elderly man multiple times on his head and face with an iron cooking pan. The victim collapsed in a pool of blood as the assault continued. Neighbors who heard the commotion rushed to help, but by the time they arrived, the accused had already fled the scene.

The victim's daughter and wife immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries after some time. Following his death, the daughter filed a formal written complaint against the three accused at the police station, setting in motion the investigation that led to the arrests.

Police Response and Investigation

DCP Srivastava confirmed that Khalasi Line police outpost incharge Shubham has been suspended for negligence in handling the initial complaint. The police department has launched a thorough investigation into the case, examining both the murder and the alleged failure to respond appropriately to the harassment complaints.

The suspension of the police officer highlights systemic issues in complaint handling, while the arrests represent the first step toward justice for the victim's family. The case continues to develop as authorities piece together the complete sequence of events and examine all aspects of police response in the matter.
