Kanpur: Frustrated over a choked sewer line that had been neglected for more than a year, a 35-year-old woman from Chakeri attempted suicide by jumping from the roof of her house on Friday. Police intervened promptly and brought her down after assuring her of appropriate action. Following the intervention and the matter gaining traction on social media, the Jal Kal department began cleaning work on Friday night.
Woman's Ordeal
The woman alleged that despite repeated complaints, she had received only empty assurances from the authorities. She stated that persistent civic neglect had left her family living amid overflowing sewage and without street lighting for over a year. The sewer line outside her house had been choked since November 2025, causing dirty water to back up into her residence and neighboring houses. Stagnant water collected on the road as the drain continued to overflow, creating a health hazard.
Lack of Response
Despite lodging multiple complaints with the municipal officials over the past year, she said she received only verbal assurances and no concrete action. Frustrated by the lack of response, she decided to take the extreme step. Fortunately, police personnel on patrol noticed her on the roof and quickly intervened.
Authorities' Action
JE Pradeep Maurya stated that a new pipe had been laid outside the house and assured that the sewer issue would now be fully resolved. To prevent further escalation, sewer cleaning began late Friday night, with Jal Kal workers arriving with a vehicle to clear the choked line. The local administration has also promised to address the street lighting issue.
