Kanpur Woman Files FIR Over Dowry and Kidney Donation Demands
A 24-year-old woman from the Chakeri area in Kanpur has taken legal action by lodging a First Information Report (FIR) against her in-laws. She accuses them of pressuring her to either provide a dowry of Rs 30 lakh or donate a kidney to her 28-year-old husband. This shocking case has brought attention to severe allegations of harassment and exploitation within a family setting.
Marriage and Hidden Health Issues
The woman approached the police with a detailed complaint, revealing that she married a man from Lucknow in June 2023. Shortly after the marriage, she discovered that her husband's family had concealed critical information about his health. It was revealed that his kidneys were damaged, and he had been undergoing dialysis since 2022, a fact kept hidden from her prior to the wedding.
Allegations of Torture and Demands
Her situation escalated dramatically on October 11, 2024, when she confronted her in-laws about her husband's health condition. In response, she alleges that they subjected her to torture and made two extreme demands:
- Donate one of her kidneys to her husband to address his medical needs.
- Pay a dowry of Rs 30 lakh as a financial compensation or alternative.
Additionally, the woman accused her husband of having an illicit relationship with another woman, further complicating the marital discord. She also claimed that her in-laws forcibly took her jewellery, adding to the alleged financial and emotional abuse.
Escape and Police Response
Fed up with the unbearable circumstances, the woman left her husband's house on October 11, 2024, and returned to Kanpur. She promptly filed a complaint with the local police, leading to the registration of an FIR. Station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra confirmed that based on her complaint, necessary legal steps have been initiated. He stated that action will be taken following a thorough investigation and the gathering of all required evidence.
This case highlights ongoing issues related to dowry demands and medical coercion in certain communities, underscoring the need for strict enforcement of laws protecting women's rights.
