KANPUR: A woman in Kanpur allegedly stabbed her husband to death following an argument over her relationship with another man, with her family claiming that the man on the phone had urged her to "finish your husband".
The incident took place on June 5 when Manish Gupta, a grocery market broker-turned-businessman, allegedly saw his wife Niharika Gupta speaking to her boyfriend on the phone. A heated argument followed, during which Niharika allegedly attacked him with a vegetable knife, police said.
Manish suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. He was initially taken to KPM Hospital on Birhana Road before being referred to Hallet Hospital, where he died during treatment 11 days later on Tuesday.
According to Pheelkhana police station in-charge Abhay Pratap Singh, Niharika admitted during questioning that she had attacked her husband with a knife. She was arrested and sent to jail.
Manish's father Ramkishore Gupta said his son had married Niharika, a teacher, in 2017 after the family learned about their relationship. The couple had a six-year-old son, Riyansh.
Ramkishore alleged that around three years ago, Niharika began an affair with a man named Angrez, whom she had met through Facebook. He claimed the two frequently spoke over the phone, which led to repeated arguments between the couple.
According to the family, Manish became suspicious of the relationship after his son allegedly saw his mother talking to Niharika's boyfriend and informed the family. They claimed Manish later kept a watch on her phone conversations.
Police said that on June 5 afternoon, Niharika was speaking with her boyfriend when Manish objected. During the argument, she allegedly stabbed him in the stomach.
The family claimed that after the attack, Manish told his father from the hospital that Niharika's boyfriend was on the call and allegedly told her to "finish him off today".
The accused's father-in-law also alleged that Niharika had earlier approached the women's police station with a dowry harassment complaint. A reconciliation was later reached between the couple, he said.
Pheelkhana police said a case of attempt to murder was registered on June 14 following a complaint by Manish's father. After Manish's death, the charges were converted to murder. Police said the allegations regarding the role of Niharika's boyfriend were being investigated.
