Karnataka High Court Directs Governments to Clarify LPG Supply for Hotels Amid Crisis
The Karnataka High Court issued a significant directive on Tuesday, ordering both the central and state governments to provide detailed clarifications by March 23 regarding the allocation, stock, and other critical aspects of commercial LPG cylinder supply to Karnataka. This move comes in response to growing concerns over supply disruptions that are severely impacting the hospitality sector in Bengaluru.
Petition Highlights Supply Shortages
Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum delivered this direction after hearing a petition filed by the Bangalore Hotels' Association and other stakeholders. The petitioners sought judicial intervention to ensure an uninterrupted supply of commercial LPG cylinders to hotels and restaurants across Bengaluru. They argued that the authorities' abrupt decision to halt supply, allegedly linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis, was arbitrary and lacked proper justification.
During the proceedings, counsel for the petitioners, K Sathish, presented compelling data to underscore the severity of the situation. He submitted that the current allocation of merely 1,000 commercial LPG cylinders for the entire state is grossly inadequate. This is particularly alarming given that Bengaluru city alone is home to approximately 40,000 hotels and restaurants, all of which rely heavily on LPG for their daily operations.
Widespread Impact on Economy and Employment
The court was further informed that the supply crunch has had a devastating ripple effect, affecting around 6 lakh people employed in these establishments. Many eateries have been forced to down their shutters temporarily, leading to significant job losses and economic hardship for workers and their families.
In addition to the direct impact on the hospitality industry, the petitioners highlighted broader economic consequences. The closure of hotels is disrupting supply chains, adversely affecting milk suppliers, the poultry industry, and providers of meat, eggs, and vegetables. This cascading effect threatens to destabilize local markets and exacerbate food security concerns in the region.
Court's Call for Accountability
Justice Magadum's directive emphasizes the urgent need for transparency and accountability from the governments. By setting a deadline of March 23, the court aims to compel swift action to address the supply issues and mitigate further damage to Karnataka's economy and social fabric.
