Tragic Electrocution Claims Father and Son in Kerala Field
A devastating incident unfolded near the Kilimanoor block panchayat office in Thiruvananthapuram district on Tuesday morning, resulting in the electrocution deaths of a 58-year-old man and his son. The victims, identified as Kochunni and his son Akhil Kannan, were residents of Kuriyidathukonam. Their lifeless bodies were discovered in a water canal within a tapioca field around 9 am by Gopalan, a relative who cultivates the leased farmland where banana, tapioca, and paddy are grown.
Illegal Electrified Fence Suspected as Cause
Preliminary police investigations strongly suggest that the fatalities were caused by an illegally electrified fence installed to prevent wild boar intrusions. According to officials, two parallel metal wires were drawn across the agricultural field and connected to an external power source without any mandatory approval or adherence to safety standards. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) personnel who inspected the site confirmed that electricity was being illegally channeled through the inner metal fencing.
Police hypothesize that the victims may have accidentally come into contact with the live wire, suffering fatal electric shocks. However, officers emphasized that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after comprehensive forensic and post-mortem examinations. A joint team led by Attingal deputy superintendent of police G Santosh Kumar, senior KSEB officials, and forensic experts conducted a meticulous inspection at the scene.
Mysterious Circumstances and Missing Evidence
Intriguingly, while uprooted tapioca plants were found near the bodies, sections of the metal fencing were conspicuously missing. This has raised suspicions that parts of the fence might have been removed after the tragic incident. The agricultural field belongs to Narayanan Potti of Kuriyidath Mutt, who does not reside at the location. Police investigations have uncovered indications that an electricity connection may have been drawn from the house of Narayanan's brother, Venu Potti. Both Gopalan and Venu are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Victims' Background and Aftermath
The deceased Kochunni is survived by his wife Ambika and daughter Athulya. His son Akhil, who worked as a construction laborer, leaves behind his wife Chinnu and two young children, Akhilesh and Adesh. The family belongs to a poor Dalit household that relied entirely on daily wage labor for their survival, making this tragedy particularly heart-wrenching from a socioeconomic perspective.
The bodies were transported to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination and were subsequently cremated in the evening. Police authorities have stated that further legal action will be determined based on the findings of the forensic report, which is expected to provide crucial insights into the exact sequence of events and potential negligence involved.
