Kerala Man Arrested for Acid Attack on Couple in Kochi
In a shocking incident in Kochi, the Ernakulam rural police have arrested a 48-year-old man for allegedly hurling acid at a couple on Sunday night. The accused, identified as Eldhose Poulose from Mamalakandam, Kuttampuzha, was taken into custody by Kuttampuzha police on Monday night following the violent attack.
Details of the Acid Attack Incident
According to police reports, the attack stemmed from an earlier altercation. The complainant, Eldhose Mathai, witnessed the accused assaulting an acquaintance and attempted to intervene. Mathai also recorded the assault on his mobile phone, which allegedly provoked the accused to retaliate.
In a premeditated move, Poulose went to the victim's house around 8:30 PM on Sunday, carrying acid in a bottle. He shouted to lure the couple outside, then poured the acid into a cup and threw it at them. Mathai sustained severe injuries all over his body, particularly on the back of his head, face, and left arm. His wife suffered burn injuries on her face, inside her nose, left hand, and chest. Additionally, the accused allegedly pushed the woman, causing her to fall.
Legal Actions and Investigation
The accused was promptly produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. A dedicated investigation team, led by inspector A Shine Kumar and including SIs K K Rajesh and P A Sibi, ASIs K P Saji, Shinoj, T P Jolly, Basil Joseph, and CPOs A J Gismon and P K Jayan, is handling the case.
Poulose has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- 329(3) for criminal trespass
- 124(2) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid
- 125(a) for acts endangering life or safety of others
- 74 for assault or criminal force to a woman with the intention to outrage her modesty
This case highlights the severe consequences of such violent acts and the swift response by law enforcement in Kerala.
