Kochi Police Uncover Sexual Assault Intent in Kalamassery Robbery Case
In a disturbing revelation from Kochi, city police investigating a violent assault and robbery of a woman in Kalamassery have disclosed that the accused intended to sexually assault her. The incident, which occurred on the night of March 15, has led to the arrest of a man from Agali in Palakkad on Sunday, following an intensive investigation.
Details of the Assault and Investigation
According to police reports, the survivor, a 23-year-old woman from Kannur, was walking alone after work in Kalamassery when she was attacked under the HMT Junction railway overpass around 8:15 PM. The assailant, who had been drinking with friends in Pathadipalam, arrived at the scene on a bike and launched a brutal assault. He allegedly slammed her head against a rock, hit her with stones, kicked her to the ground, and rubbed her face on the ground, before robbing her.
Initially treated as a robbery case, the true nature of the crime emerged after a detailed statement from the survivor. Kochi City Deputy Commissioner of Police Shahansha K S stated at a news conference, "As per the initial statement, we considered it a robbery. But the in-depth details of the incident were revealed after collecting the survivor's detailed statement," highlighting the accused's intent to sexually assault her.
Police Efforts and Arrest
A special team of 10 police officers was formed to track down the accused, who was identified as a temporary worker for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The investigation involved inspecting footage from over 200 CCTV cameras across three districts and verifying thousands of call data records. Police revealed that the accused had worked at a car showroom in Ernakulam from 2022 to 2025, making him familiar with the city's roads.
The arrest was made at the accused's house, where police recovered the stolen mobile phone and the two-wheeler used in the crime. During interrogation, he admitted to the assault and robbery. Police are seeking custody to recover additional stolen items, including a gold necklace and earring. To protect his identity pending a test identification parade, the accused was taken to court with a black hood.
Broader Safety Concerns
DCP Shahansha also addressed broader safety issues, noting that crimes connected to railway lines have come to police attention, including a murder in Vyttila and a body recovery in the city. He emphasized that police are examining ways to make such black spots safer for the public.
This case underscores the vigilance required in urban areas and the critical role of detailed victim statements in uncovering the full scope of criminal intent.
