Major Drug Bust in Kochi: Police Arrest Two Key Distributors with Synthetic Substances

In a significant crackdown on narcotics, the Kochi city police arrested two men late on Friday night, seizing a substantial quantity of synthetic drugs from an apartment near Edappally. The operation, conducted within the jurisdiction of the Cheranalloor police station, targeted individuals allegedly involved in the distribution of dangerous substances among the youth in Ernakulam.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

The police confiscated 10.26 grams of MDMA, 1.8 grams of ecstasy pills, and 0.1024 grams of LSD stamps from the accused. The arrested persons have been identified as Rizwan Rafiq, aged 32, from Thalassery, and Muhammad Safwan, also 32, from Chirakkara in Kannur. Authorities revealed that Safwan was already an accused in previous drug-related cases at Thalassery and Dharmadam police stations, highlighting his involvement in illicit activities.

Police Investigation and Tip-Off

The arrests were executed by the district anti-narcotics special action force team, led by Narcotic Cell Assistant Commissioner T D Sunilkumar. The operation was initiated based on a crucial tip-off received by Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, underscoring the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region.

Role in Drug Distribution Network

According to police statements, the accused were key figures in the distribution of MDMA among youngsters in Ernakulam. Their arrest is expected to disrupt a significant supply chain of synthetic drugs, which pose severe health risks and contribute to substance abuse issues in the community. The police emphasized that this bust is part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of narcotics and protect vulnerable populations from addiction.

Separate Incident: Man Arrested for Assault and Robbery

In an unrelated case, the Ernakulam central police arrested a 43-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly assaulting and robbing a Tamil Nadu native at knifepoint. The accused, Pradeesh K P from Kathrikadavu, was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.

Details of the Robbery Case

The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on February 25, when the victim, a native of Kanyakumari, was near Ernakulam South railway station to catch a train to his hometown. Pradeesh and another man attacked him, snatching his mobile phone, wallet containing Rs 3,500, ATM card, and driving licence. This arrest highlights the police's vigilance in addressing violent crimes alongside drug-related offenses, ensuring public safety in Kochi.

The combined efforts in these cases demonstrate the Kochi police's commitment to maintaining law and order, targeting both narcotics distribution and violent criminal activities to foster a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
