The special investigation team (SIT) of the Kochi city police has made another arrest in connection with the racket involved in forging documents to facilitate illegal organ trade. The arrested individual has been identified as Debin Joseph (38), a resident of Marayoor. He is suspected to have played a key role in identifying financially vulnerable people who could be targeted for illegal organ transplants.
Joseph was apprehended by the SIT from Punnamada at approximately 5 am. Meanwhile, the custodial interrogation of the prime accused, Mohammed Najeeb (53), continued on Thursday. Investigators revealed that Joseph's involvement came to light during the verification of documents seized from Najeeb.
Najeeb was arrested by a team of the Ernakulam rural police and remains in custody. The city police are probing the racket after a case was registered at the Ambalamedu police station. Officials have confirmed that the two wings of the state police are effectively coordinating the investigation to ensure a thorough probe into the illegal organ trade network.
