Mysuru/Madikeri: The II Additional District and Sessions Court in Kodagu granted bail to P A Ponnappa, also known as Vishal, on Saturday. He is the owner of a homestay in Kutta who was booked in connection with the alleged rape of a US tourist. The incident occurred two weeks ago.
Details of the Arrest
Vishal was charged with attempting to suppress the incident and was arrested on April 18 along with Vrijesh, a cook at the homestay who was accused of rape. Both were initially remanded in judicial custody. Sources indicated that Vrijesh's advocate is likely to move his bail plea on Monday.
Bail Conditions
The court granted Vishal bail on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties of the same amount. He is directed to appear for all hearings, not tamper with witnesses or evidence, not leave the court's jurisdiction without permission, and cooperate with the investigation. His advocate Kokkanda Appanna said Vishal is likely to be released on Monday as the order came late Saturday. He will remain in custody until then.
Allegations and Denial
Vishal denied the allegations while seeking bail. According to the complaint filed by the American woman, Vrijesh raped her on April 12 at the homestay after she was served a sedative-laced guava juice upon arrival. The complaint also alleged that Vishal had disconnected the Wi-Fi at the facility and pressured her not to disclose the incident to the police or anyone else.
