The Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage has initiated the identification and conservation of hero stones, locally known as Veeragallu, across the three taluks of Kushalnagar, Somwarpet, and Madikeri in Kodagu district. More than 500 hero stones and numerous stone inscriptions have been documented in these regions.
First Phase of Conservation
In the initial phase, 55 to 60 hero stones located in villages such as Hudugur, Bendebetta, the Harangi backwater area, Seegehosur, and Athur in Kushalnagar taluk have been selected for preservation. Work has commenced to conserve these stones and compile detailed records for each artifact. The department has instructed that comprehensive information on all stone inscriptions, including Veeragallu found in both rural and urban areas of the district, be documented.
Project Proposal and Funding
A development-oriented project proposal has been submitted to the state level for approval. Under the action plan sanctioned for the fiscal year 2025–26, the preservation of these stone inscriptions will be carried out across the three taluks. BP Rekha, the officer from the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage in Kodagu, confirmed that the work is progressing as per the approved plan.
This initiative aims to safeguard the cultural heritage of Kodagu by preserving these historical markers, which provide valuable insights into the region's past. The department expects that the conservation efforts will also promote tourism and historical research in the area.
