Kolhapur Introduces Experimental Traffic Measures at Popular Rankala Lake
The Kolhapur city traffic control department has rolled out a comprehensive new set of regulations aimed at alleviating severe congestion around the highly frequented Rankala Lake tourist destination. These measures, which include the establishment of new no-parking zones, implementation of one-way routes, and strategic route diversions, will be in effect for a 15-day experimental period to assess their impact on traffic flow.
Specific Route Changes and Parking Restrictions
Under the newly enforced plan, several key stretches around the lake have been designated as one-way routes to streamline vehicle movement. These include the road from Rankala Tower to Rankala Stand, the section from Rankala Stand to Tatakadil Talim Mandal, and the onward route to Sakoli Corner. Additionally, a strict 50-meter no-parking zone has been established on all roads leading to the Tatakadil Talim Chowk and the Jockey Building area to prevent obstructive parking.
Traffic movement from Jockey Building to Sakoli Corner has been completely restricted, requiring vehicles to take a mandatory detour via Rankala Stand. Furthermore, entry to the connecting stretch between Rankala Tower and Jawlacha Ganpati has been prohibited entirely as part of the congestion-easing strategy.
Officials Cite Need for Tourist Convenience and Past Challenges
City Traffic Inspector Nandkumar More explained that the implementation of these new traffic regulations began on Thursday. He acknowledged initial challenges, noting that many commuters remain unfamiliar with the changes, leading to some two-wheelers unintentionally entering the newly established one-way zones. "We expect regular commuters to adjust to the revised routes in the coming days," More stated, emphasizing that the primary goal is to ensure convenience for the thousands of daily tourists visiting Rankala Lake.
Police officials revealed that previous attempts to manage traffic, such as implementing diversions and designating specific parking areas for tourist vehicles, had yielded only limited success. This experimental 15-day period is designed to test more comprehensive solutions to the persistent congestion problem.
Coordination with Municipal Corporation and Ongoing Practices
The traffic department is actively coordinating with the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to enhance overall parking management in the area. Specific proposals include the introduction of a pay-and-park facility near the mall on Phulewadi Road and the installation of clear, visible signage for both parking areas and traffic diversions to improve driver awareness and compliance.
Inspector More also confirmed that a previously trialed measure—restricting heavy vehicle movement for four hours daily between 5 PM and 9 PM—has proven effective in improving traffic flow along Rankala Lake and will continue to be enforced alongside the new regulations. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a sustainable solution for managing the high volume of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at one of Kolhapur's most iconic tourist spots.
