Kolhapur Court Grants Seven-Day Police Custody in Flower Merchant Murder Case
In a significant development in a chilling kidnapping and murder case, a local court in Kolhapur has remanded two accused individuals in seven-day police custody. The arrests pertain to the alleged abduction and killing of a 40-year-old flower merchant, whose body was discovered earlier this week.
Details of the Crime and Victim
The deceased has been identified as Bharateshwar Rajgonda Topgonda, a resident of Danoli village. According to police reports, Topgonda had been missing since Monday night. His body was subsequently found in a field on Tuesday morning, sparking immediate investigation and community outrage.
Arrest and Identification of Accused
The two accused were apprehended by law enforcement after their voices were recognized by local villagers. This identification occurred during a phone call made to Topgonda's family, in which the perpetrators demanded a ransom of Rs 25 lakh. The swift action by the community and police led to the arrests, highlighting the collaborative effort in solving the case.
Police Investigation and Accused Background
Police officials revealed that both accused had consumed ganja prior to the incident and were initially planning to kidnap another individual. When that attempt failed, they allegedly targeted Topgonda as he was on his way home. The accused, identified as Rajdeep Ajay Tade (21) and Tillu alias Manthan Rajendra Chandure-Pawar, are not residents of Danoli village but were staying there with relatives. Both have criminal backgrounds, including serious offenses such as attempted murder.
Amol Thakur, the sub-divisional police officer, stated: "We presented both the accused before the Jaysingpur court. The court granted us their custody till April 21."
Brutal Methods and Community Response
The investigation uncovered that the accused used an electric battery to administer shocks to the merchant as a form of torture. Additionally, it was determined that the victim was strangled using a muffler. In response to the heinous crime, villagers and relatives initially refused to conduct the last rites unless strict action was assured against the perpetrators. Authorities intervened, and the funeral was eventually held around midnight on Tuesday.
Village Protest and Political Involvement
On Wednesday, the villagers observed a bandh and organized a silent march from Danoli village to the SDPO's office. During this march, they submitted a petition outlining their demands for justice and enhanced security measures. Former MP Raju Shetti visited the merchant's family, offering assurances that he would follow up with the investigation to ensure justice is served.
