Kolhapur Motorcyclist Succumbs to Injuries After Collision with Roadside Signboard
A tragic road accident claimed the life of a young motorcyclist in Kolhapur on Monday evening. The incident occurred along the Hatkanangle-Kumbhoj road at approximately 5:24 PM, resulting in fatal consequences for the rider.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The victim, identified as Saurabh Ajit Gazi, a 24-year-old resident of Dudhgaon village in Miraj tehsil of Sangli district, was riding his motorcycle towards Kumbhoj to meet his brother. According to police reports, Gazi was traveling at high speed when his bike veered off the road due to a sandy slope along the roadside edge.
In an attempt to regain control and return to the road, the motorcycle struck the concrete base of a roadside signboard. The impact was so severe that the bike lifted into the air, throwing Gazi several feet off his seat while he still held the handlebars. He first crashed onto a paving block, then hit a tree trunk, and the motorcycle landed on him moments later.
Police Investigation and Local Concerns
The Hatkanangle police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to rash driving. An officer stated that the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, providing crucial evidence for the investigation. Authorities are also examining whether the roadside signboard was installed in a hazardous manner that contributed to the accident.
Local residents informed the police that this stretch of road is accident-prone. They noted that a fatal crash involving a car and a motorcycle had occurred at a sharp turn just two months prior. Residents highlighted the sandy edges of the roadside, which can cause vehicles to slip if not properly controlled, potentially a factor in Gazi's accident.
Medical Response and Aftermath
An ambulance reached the spot within minutes of the accident. Gazi was rushed to a hospital in Ichalkaranji, where doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival. The preliminary medical report cited severe head injury and damage to the spine as the cause of death.
Gazi was employed at a private firm in Karad, Satara district, and had planned to return there after meeting his brother. The police have examined the accident site thoroughly, and further investigations are ongoing to determine all contributing factors and ensure accountability.
