Tension has enveloped Khorimachan village in the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas, following a severe incident where a young student was critically injured in an explosion. The victim, identified as Kaulu Gayen, a class 4 student, is currently receiving treatment at Kolkata's SSKM Hospital after sustaining serious injuries to his eyes and hands.
Details of the Wednesday Night Incident
According to information from police sources, the unfortunate event took place late on Wednesday night. Local residents reported hearing a massive explosion around 8 pm. The blast occurred when Kaulu had gone to a neighbouring house, which belongs to his uncle, Anar Sekh. The boy had reportedly visited after finishing his studies for the day.
"Within a few minutes, we heard the explosion. He was badly injured," stated Shamima Bibi, a relative of the young victim. After the blast, the injured child was first rushed to Basanti Hospital for initial care. Due to the severity of his wounds, he was subsequently referred to the more advanced SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for specialized treatment.
Underlying Land Dispute and Family Allegations
While the Gayen and Sekh families have lived as neighbours and historically maintained cordial relations, a recent rift has emerged. Relatives of the injured boy have pointed to a growing tension over a land-related dispute as a potential catalyst for the incident.
A family member of the victim made a serious allegation, stating, "We are no longer on good terms. They have turned hostile over a piece of land. There must be some malicious intent behind this incident." This accusation has cast a shadow over the tragic event, suggesting it may not have been entirely accidental.
In a contrasting claim, the family of Anwar Sekh has denied any wrongdoing. They explained that a family function was being held at their house at the time and several "chocolate bombs" (a type of firecracker) were being burst, which might have accidentally caused the boy's injuries.
Police Investigation and Current Status
As of now, no formal complaint has been lodged by either family. However, the police have not remained passive. Canning SDPO Ram Mondal confirmed that the authorities have initiated a suo motu case and launched their own investigation into the matter. "The boy has injuries on his eyes and hands. We have started an investigation on our own," stated SDPO Mondal.
A significant development in the case is that Anwar Sekh, the uncle, has reportedly been absconding since the child was admitted to SSKM Hospital. Police officials have stated they are examining all possible angles and are awaiting detailed medical reports to understand the exact nature and cause of the injuries. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events of that Wednesday night in Khorimachan village.
