A 44-year-old man, Swarup Dey, and his 40-year-old wife were reportedly assaulted in a violent incident near the Park Street–Mullickbazar crossing in Kolkata on Sunday. The couple, who reside in a complex close to Garia station, became involved in a drunken brawl while out for a late-night meal, leading to serious injuries and a police investigation.

According to the complainant, the victim's wife, the incident occurred around 4:30 am when the couple reached 17, Park Street. She stated that a group of men initiated an argument, wrongfully restrained her husband, threatened him, and pushed him to the ground. The fall caused a cut on his head, and he was then allegedly assaulted further. When she tried to intervene, she was physically assaulted and sustained injuries as well.
Police reported that Dey was first taken to Bellevue Clinic for preliminary treatment and was discharged. He was later transported to Peerless Hospital for further medical care. A case has been registered in connection with the assault, and authorities are actively investigating the matter.

An officer involved in the case mentioned that the victim did not know the assailants, complicating the investigation. "We are scanning CCTV footage for leads. We are not certain what prompted the brawl and whether there was anything to do with the passing of objectionable comments. The woman's statement will be officially taken in front of a magistrate," the officer said.
Officers are also trying to establish if the altercation began inside an eating outlet or on the street, and whether alcohol consumption by any party contributed to the escalation. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been reported in the case, but police are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects.
