A couple from Sarsuna suffered serious injuries after a severe collision between their motorcycle and a private car on the Maa Flyover near Science City in Kolkata on Tuesday morning. The incident caused significant traffic disruption during the peak office hours.
Details of the Maa Flyover Collision
The accident occurred around 8:30 am near the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre at a turning on the flyover. According to police, the motorcycle rider, Santunu Dutta (49), and his pillion rider wife, Maya Dutta (42), were heading towards Park Circus. A private car, which was on the Science City-bound flank, first hit the divider and then jumped onto the opposite lane, crashing directly into the couple's bike.
Police officials confirmed that both Santunu and Maya were wearing helmets at the time of the impact. This crucial safety measure is believed to have prevented more severe head injuries. However, the couple sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to SSKM Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Doctors have stated that the man's condition remains critical.
Traffic Chaos and Police Response
The high-impact collision led to heavy traffic congestion on the Maa Flyover, disrupting the morning commute. Police teams worked swiftly to manage the situation. They cleared the wreckage from the road, removing both the severely damaged motorcycle and the car from the flyover. Thanks to their prompt action, traffic flow gradually returned to normal within the next 20 minutes.
Investigation Underway
Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that both vehicles were travelling at high speed, which may have been a contributing factor in the loss of control and the subsequent collision. A thorough probe is currently in progress to determine the exact cause of the accident.
As part of the investigation, both vehicles have been impounded and taken to the local police station for a detailed technical examination. Law enforcement officers are also reviewing available CCTV footage from the vicinity to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragic accident.
