Court Grants Extension for Crucial Border Security Report

The Calcutta High Court has provided the West Bengal government with an additional seven days to submit a comprehensive report detailing the steps taken for fencing work along the sensitive India-Bangladesh border. This decision came on Friday when the state's legal representatives requested more time to prepare their response.

Judicial Bench and Previous Proceedings

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen had previously heard this Public Interest Litigation on November 13, directing the state to file its report within fifteen days. The latest hearing saw the state counsel formally seeking an extension to compile the necessary information about the border security measures.

The Security Concerns Behind the PIL

The significant legal action was initiated by Lt General Subrata Saha, a distinguished former deputy chief of Army staff who currently serves as the executive chairman of the Manekshaw Centre for National Security Studies and Research. In his petition, the military veteran emphasized the grave threat to national security posed by the unfenced stretches along the international border with Bangladesh.

The extended deadline now gives state authorities until next week to present their detailed account of the progress made in securing these vulnerable border sections through appropriate fencing infrastructure.
