Kolkata Police and CAPF Hold Strategic Coordination Meeting for Election Security
A crucial joint coordination meeting between Kolkata Police and senior commanders of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) was conducted on Monday at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines. The session, which saw the attendance of Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand along with other high-ranking officers, focused on developing robust deployment strategies, enhancing area domination, conducting vulnerability mapping, and strengthening inter-agency coordination mechanisms.
Election Commission Observers Intensify Ground-Level Monitoring
Following this high-level meeting, Election Commission (EC) police and general observers have ramped up their visits to local police stations under fresh directives. An EC missive issued on Sunday explicitly instructed police observers to ensure violence-free elections, prevent voter intimidation, and stop any attempts at rigging. To guarantee a secure electoral environment, observers were ordered to visit all police stations within their jurisdictions and submit detailed reports by Monday evening to special observer N K Mishra, a retired IPS officer.
Stringent Directives to Ensure Accountability and Law Enforcement
The observers have been further directed to identify potential troublemakers, execute pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs), and hold Officers-in-Charge (OCs) accountable through comprehensive ground-level policing audits. The EC directive made it clear that errant police officers would face legal action. EC officials also expressed significant displeasure regarding a West Bengal Civil Service (Ex) officer who remains at large in a murder case, especially after the Supreme Court rejected his bail application.
Comprehensive Measures to Boost Voter Confidence and Security
The Election Commission has issued a series of mandates to observers aimed at tracing vulnerabilities at polling stations and boosting voter confidence. It was strongly emphasized that the upcoming election requires strict maintenance of law and order, along with seamless synchronization between local police and central forces. Observers must ensure that voters can cast their ballots without fear, while preventing fraudulent voting and booth jamming incidents.
They are required to prepare detailed lists of known criminals in close liaison with local police and thoroughly review the execution of non-bailable warrants. These critical expectations must be communicated directly to Officers-in-Charge during dedicated meetings, with explicit warnings that any negligence may result in severe disciplinary action.
