Kolkata: The remand application for the two men arrested for allegedly throwing eggs at Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh on Monday states that police want to study “the modus operandi” in play and take the case beyond a single incident.
The note, filed in Alipore court on Tuesday, said the “investigating agency is ready to toil day and night to unearth the truth behind the modus operandi of the crime” outside the Kalighat home of former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Police also said the attackers, who they described as part of “an unlawful assembly”, intended to “dishonour” Ghosh, not merely “hurt” him.
While police sought judicial remand for the two — Chandan Singh and Ravi Kayal — the court granted them bail as the charges against them were bailable. The charges are unlawful assembly, act endangering life, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal trespass.
Ghosh alleged in his FIR that Singh was an “independent witness” for CID when it searched the Trinamool office on the premises of Banerjee’s residence on June 9.
TOI did not find Singh at his home in Bhowanipore — 18B Asutosh Mukherjee Road — on Wednesday afternoon. A dog was barking inside, but no one answered the door. Neighbours said Singh is usually seen in the locality in the evening.
The 36-year-old’s flat is on the top floor of a five-storey building. When asked about Singh’s apartment, most shopkeepers in the neighbourhood pointed at a top-floor apartment. “There is a big dog in his (Chandan Singh’s) flat. He does not stay here on most days. He has strong political opinions and is close to several local BJP functionaries, who come here often,” said a resident of the building.
Singh moved to the Asutosh Mukherjee Road address from 31 Madan Pal Lane in Bhowanipore after he got a job that was previously assigned to his father, neighbours said. At both addresses, neighbours said Singh barely interacted with them.
The other accused, Rabi Kayal (32), is a resident of Harish Mukherjee Road. He repeatedly told police that he was not carrying eggs that day.
The police informed the court that they issued a notice to Kayal, asking him to join the investigation, based on “credible information” from their sources. He was interrogated before being arrested.
“Singh was arrested later, based on Kayal’s statements and information from our sources,” said an officer.
