Kolkata: Police on Wednesday seized an SUV belonging to former MLA and Trinamool functionary Sabyasachi Dutta and froze five bank accounts linked to him and his wife as part of a probe into an extortion and criminal intimidation case filed by a Salt Lake businessman.
On Wednesday, Dutta was produced in a Bidhannagar court after an eight-day police remand. The court extended his custody by six days.
Details of the Case
The businessman from Salt Lake had lodged a complaint alleging extortion and criminal intimidation against Sabyasachi Dutta. Following the complaint, the police initiated an investigation and subsequently took Dutta into custody. During the probe, authorities identified the SUV and multiple bank accounts believed to be connected to the alleged crimes.
Legal Proceedings
After the initial eight-day remand, Dutta was presented before the Bidhannagar court on Wednesday. The prosecution sought further custody to continue the investigation, which the court granted, extending his remand by six more days.
Assets Seized
The police action included the seizure of a sports utility vehicle registered in Dutta's name. Additionally, five bank accounts belonging to Dutta and his wife were frozen to prevent any transaction of funds that might be linked to the extortion case.
